STANDARDS of RESPECT

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:
The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.

The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

Note: Most American Legion Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14th. Many Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Girl Scout Troops retire flags regularly as well. Contact your local American Legion Hall or Scout Troop to inquire about the availability of this service.

Displaying the Flag Outdoors

When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff.

When it is displayed from the same flagpole with another flag - of a state, community, society or Scout unit - the flag of the United States must always be at the top except that the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for Navy personnel when conducted by a Naval chaplain on a ship at sea.

When the flag is displayed over a street, it should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If the flag is suspended over a sidewalk, the flag's union should be farthest from the building.

When flown with flags of states, communities, or societies on separate flag poles which are of the same height and in a straight line, the flag of the United States is always placed in the position of honor - to its own right...The other flags may be smaller but none may be larger...No other flag ever should be placed above it...The flag of the United States is always the first flag raised and the last to be lowered.

When flown with the national banner of other countries, each flag must be displayed from a separate pole of the same height. Each flag should be the same size. They should be raised and lowered simultaneously. The flag of one nation may not be displayed above that of another nation.

Raising and Lowering the Flag

The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. Ordinarily it should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night.The flag of the United States of America is saluted as it is hoisted and lowered. The salute is held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the last note of music, whichever is the longest.

Displaying the Flag Indoors

When on display, the flag is accorded the place of honor, always positioned to its own right. Place it to the right of the speaker or staging area or sanctuary. Other flags should be to the left.
The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of states, localities, or societies are grouped for display.

When one flag is used with the flag of the United States of America and the staffs are crossed, the flag of the United States is placed on its own right with its staff in front of the other flag.

When displaying the flag against a wall, vertically or horizontally, the flag's union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag's own right, and to the observer's left.

Parading and Saluting the Flag

When carried in a procession, the flag should be to the right of the marchers.

When other flags are carried, the flag of the United States may be centered in front of the others or carried to their right.

When the flag passes in a procession, or when it is hoisted or lowered, all should face the flag and salute.

The Salute

To salute, all persons come to attention. Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute. Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart. Members of organizations in formation salute upon command of the person in charge.

The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem

The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and saluting.When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.

The Flag in Mourning

To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered.

On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.
The flag is to be flown at half staff in mourning for designated, principal government leaders and upon presidential or gubernatorial order.
When used to cover a casket, the flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. It should not be lowered into the grave.

Speaking to a group of young Catholics in New York almost one month before Election Day, I had a harsh awakening as jarring as a shot of Wild Turkey 101. Weeks before going to the polling booth, Americans do not know Barack Obama.

In a packed bar, I was discussing the contentious question of whether a Catholic can support Obama for president. I highlighted the priority that defending innocent human lives takes in these considerations, according to the Church. I then went through Obama's radical record on abortion. The jolt came after I finished speaking, when one by one, people told me they had no idea Obama was so radical.

They were shocked. And so was I.

We've been understandably focused on the economy lately, so much so that it's as if there are no other issues. But there are. And in the time we have left, voters must consider them.

Though for Catholics, in the end, it's up to the individual, through prayer, to decide upon political matters, my conclusion is that it would be a very tough thing for a follower of the Pope to back the senator -- impossible, actually. Obama has stood on the floor of the Illinois statehouse and argued that a baby born alive due to a botched abortion should not have the same rights as a child carried to term. That, in and of itself -- his opposition to Illinois' Born Alive Infants Protection Act, which sought to mandate safeguards for such unwanted children -- is a heavy obstacle to overcome for those Obama fans concerned about the future and dignity of human life. He defended infanticide. That alone would be enough to keep me from voting for him. But, as it happens, it's not the only ethical affront the Obama campaign has committed, and far from the only offense to human rights that the Democratic presidential candidate supports.

Barack Obama has told the Planned Parenthood Action Fund that the first thing he will sign as president will be the Freedom of Choice Act, which will sweep away limits on abortion -- state and federal -- including restrictions on government funding of abortion and laws protecting anti-abortion health care providers.

Barack Obama has condemned the Supreme Court's Gonzales v. Carhart ruling, which affirmed the federal partial-birth abortion ban.

Barack Obama supports federal funding of abortion.

Barack Obama opposes the Hyde Amendment, which restricts use of taxpayer dollars for supporting abortion.

Barack Obama called pregnancy "punishment.

"Barack Obama believes that the right to have an abortion is a matter of equal rights for women.

Barack Obama wants to stop federal funding to crisis-pregnancy centers.

Barack Obama does not support the Pregnant Women Support Act, a project of Democrats for Life, meant to reduce abortions by strengthening the social safety net. This is important because it exposes as a lie a major talking point employed by those who argue that pro-lifers can support Obama. It shows much of the left's patronizing rhetoric to be nothing but rank deceit. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- a Catholic who developed her own theology to justify her abortion support -- and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have not allowed this important act to even come to a vote.

I don't think I'm unreasonable in thinking that sweeping away all abortion limits and funding abortion with federal tax dollars (while defunding centers that provide alternatives to abortion) will increase rather than decrease abortions in the United States.

"The election of Barack Obama would endanger the lives of thousands of unborn children," University of Alabama professor Michael New tells me. "If he follows through on his pledge to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, it would likely nullify many state-level pro-life laws that the pro-life movement has worked hard to enact.

"Calculations from the results of a 2004 Heritage Foundation study, authored by New, indicate that the repeal of all state-level public funding restrictions, parental-involvement laws and informed-consent laws would result in 125,000 more abortions every year. The repeal of federal pro-life laws might well push the numbers up even higher.

You can fall in love with the romantic idea of a black man becoming president of the United States, but in a country where black women have abortions at five times the rate of white women, he is a profile in cowardice. In a land where we have devoted ourselves to the pursuit of life, this is unacceptable.

Vote as if lives depend on you.

monday

today is a great day!
its the day i finally got a tv! (next step: a J O B!!!)
yes i know wow that sounds lame... BUT keep in mind for over a month now ive been living in the BOQ (other then the nights i spend at the kelsos) with nothing to do!
i hardly have internet service, didnt have a tv, no cell phone service, no job and really just nothing worth doing! (and dont say read a book either cause we all know thats a no)
so i just sat around doing nothing most the time. hence making a blog. :)
but now i can finally watch my favorite show, jon and kate plus 8!! (coming on in 9 minutes!)

now if only my mom would mail my package... then i could have some things from home to make me feel more at home. and then maybe not be hurting myself so much at the gym with really bad "gym" shoes...
yeah...


i love those flowers! just like the ones in my room... ah i cant wait to have a house and room again. and to see my little brothers and sister!
please people pray that stupid house rents/sells SOON!

back to the BOQ

well after spending the last two nights at my sister ashley's house i think its time to take a little break from gilmore girls and watch carrier!

its a show i both love and hate. its fun to see the people you know on this but at the same time some of those people just really make me mad. i really hate to see people talk bad about the navy. no one MADE them join, they did it on their own. take pride in what you do!

also, after going to SVCC tonight to see avalon with the croziers and then the browns its really making me see how much all the kids i used to baby sit have grown. i think i might have said this in a post the other day but i can't remember. anyways just makes me really miss my family living here and being neighbors with the boyers and lassens and everyone else. i really love being back lemoore is such a great place!

it was alot of fun getting to go do that with him.
i think his mommy was sad with out him though.
i can't wait till i can do this way more often

so in the past few months i've gotten really passionate about donating blood. it makes me sad to see how many people just won't do it and for the most stupid reasons ever! it's so easy and SO needed. i got a call the other day from the blood bank i went to in virginia asking me to come donate again because they need it so badly and i can't but think of how many others can but they just don't. pick a cause that is close to your heart and sometimes that makes it even more worth it, at least for me it is. i was donating for the military people who were injured and such there. now since i can't do that i think i will start going to childrens hospital. not that just doing it at a regular old blood bank for the american red cross is not important but for me it's an even greater reward to know what i'm helping with. :)
i really hope to hear about more people donating soon!

Got Your Nose "Heckaca"!

so i think i will post very randomly on here,
meaning some days a bunch and others not at all!

anyways i've been thinking about my noah lately... he is having is 5TH birthday on thursday. and i have to miss it :(
any ways he is such a crazy kid...
i guess the other night michael was walking around the house and said "i really miss dad" and noah said "yeah michet (his way of saying michael) you miss dad the most and i miss heckaca (his way of saying jessica, oh and he NEVER calls me jessie) the most, right?"
its so funny. if my dad will ask "noah do you love mom?" he will say "yeah!" then "do you love jessica?" "YEAH!" do you love me (my dad)?" "i love heckaca mom AND you..." he wont ever just say he loves my dad.
he is truely a sisters boy!
i miss him. i miss them all actually.
so anyways i was remembering a little video clip from last summer, he would always play that i got your nose game but he took it so seriously. he really thought people took his nose! sooo funny!

i can't believe my nephew is already one today!
its so exciting and at the same time so sad :(

im a bridesmaid!

so today i was woken up by my phone dieing/a new voice mail from my friend emily!
she got engaged the other night to my friend andy and was telling me how stressed and nervous she is and she asked me to be a bridesmaid too!
so its for sure now i will be going back to visit virginia next year!
im so excited for the wedding though! yay.

my last/second summer in virginia

so i want to get to the fun stuff (california) but first here is my second summer in virginia.
i actually didnt get to go on any vacations this year and that was kinda sad for me but no doubt about it we stayed SO busy. we had 11 weeks of company (ashley levi alex the boyers laura and joanna!)
i spent lots of time with company, worked during the day, went to a few baseball games, worked concerts for jamie's team, spent time at the pool, hung out with friends, and got ready to move back to california!

Gary Allan Concert!

the navy bases around here were having a summer thing where they had all kinds of country singers come do free concerts! there were some really good ones that came but i was only able to go to gary allan. it was alot of fun going for me... i also talked ashley into coming along with levi jamie and noah.
